Chippenham Wheelers 3up TTT
14th October 2012
Two a3crg teams travelled over to Bishops Cannings in Wiltshire on this cold but bright Sunday morning, teams as follows;
"A" team - Phil, Seb & Paddy
"B" team - Me, John H & Trevor
Myself and the remaining "B" teamers had a pretty good ride, although John struggled a bit on the hills he made up for it on the downhills. Most of the time we stayed together and for once I felt fairly comfortable. Finished in a 1:01 holding off our "A" team who started 6 minutes behind, for some reason we only picked up prize money for 2nd Vets team, although we were actually the 1st Vet team?!
The "A" team had a much stronger ride with Paddy doing only a few turns and getting dropped on the hills. Even so they finished in a 55 ish but 2 minutes behind the winning VC St. Raphael team, still a cracking ride and picking up 2nd place prize money on their first ride on the course.

Tour of the Lod Valley
7th October 2012
Following dad's 70th bash and then Gaby's 21st birthday party the night before, getting up this morning was a struggle to participate in the seasonal Tour of the Lod Valley.
Bright but fresh morning made for a freezing downhill and hot uphill timetrial! Finished with a reasonable 1:05 and part of the winning team with Seb & Charlie, by the very close margin of 2 seconds from VC St. Raphael!
However the £5 prize money was quickly swallowed up after losing my Polar computer out on the course!

A well deserved win! After so many ups and downs, Phil won the Surrey League 2/3rd Cat race at Cutmill. After settling down near the ponds probably 3 miles from the start with picnic, deck-chairs and camera all set, who should come flying round the bend? Phil, already in a break with 1 other rider! Now even though he'd been going well for awhile, Phil was just getting over a heavy cold and I couldn't help thinking was this too early.
However, the 2 man break was joined by another 4 riders and they soon stretched their advantage to around 01:30, they looked as if they were working well together but another group of around 6 riders were chasing really hard and they caught the lead group with 2 laps to go. After lots of attacks, the group now down to about 10 riders hit the long drag to the finish, even though he was cramping badly, Phil didn't let anyone get away and found himself 2nd wheel and with approx. 200 metres from the finish pulled out for the win!
Really chuffed for him and a thoroughly deserved win, awesome.

Purbeck One Day Tour
12th August 2012
An early start for this 2 part race at Wareham, consisting of a short TT on road bikes followed by a hilly road race on the Wool/Lulworth circuit. Eighty riders started with Phil finishing in 11th place in the TT, just 20 seconds behind the leader. The road race started at 1:30pm going up the main climb 6 times, Phil was very active throughout the race and broke away on the last lap, only to be caught with approx. 3 miles to go. Luckily he had enough in the tank for the final climb and finished in an impressive 4th place and 10th overall.

Farnham 4up TTT
5th August 2012
This event always tends to be eventful and this year was no exception, myself, Andy, Rob and John H lined up for this event reasonably confident of a decent performance. Unfortunately about 2 minutes after starting it absolutely chucked it down, now I don't mind the rain but this was so bad I couldn't see the guys wheel in front of me! We carried on but I kept leaving gaps and after awhile the gap was too big and I left the 3 of them to it.
Meanwhile Phil, Seb, Darren and Paddy set off and although Darren had the misfortune to puncture and damage his rim, the remaining 3 stuck at it to record a fast 51:54 putting them in 4th place.

Sotonia Heath Race - Phil 2nd place, although 1st place was so close, if only the car hadn't impeded his sprint, Phil clipped the car's wing mirror as he went to go round the rider at the front, luckily he stayed on his bike and held on for 2nd place.

Olympics
Myself, Phil and Trevor went to watch the road race today, caught the train to Guildford and cycled over to Leatherhead and then over to Headley nr Boxhill. Thousands of people lined the streets to create an amazing atmosphere, unfortunately Team GB couldn't match the hype and failed to grab a medal.
Also popped over to Southampton on Sunday and had our photos taken with an Olympic Torch.

Trailtrax
15th July 2012
This navigator race started from the Flower Pots at Cheriton, unusually for this year the sun was shining! However a lot of the trails were really muddy and overgrown and this made it particularly tough going at times. Myself and Trev did really well though and came 1st in our category, as usual the 3 hours ended a bit too quickly and we didn't quite make the full-house of check-points as we'd hoped, but a good result all the same.

Surrey League
8th July 2012
Phil raced today in this hilly-ish road race around Cuckfield, usual 2nd/3rd cat race over 70 ish miles. Typical weather for July, which was heavy showers followed by heavy showers with the occasional burst of sunshine, oh that was when he had finished!
Very early on a break got away with 3 or 4 riders, this then whittled down to just one rider who to his credit stayed away for the remainder of the race. 2 riders finished just head of the bunch with Phil winning the up hill bunch sprint for 4th place.

National Team Time Trial
30th June 2012
Myself, John and Rob were riding as the "B" team today with Phil, Seb and Graeme as our "A" team in this National Team Time Trial over a sporting 37 miles at Preston Candover.
Unfortunately Graeme punctured on the first lap of the two lap course which put paid to Phil's ride, however on the plus side my ride with my team mates went very well, finally putting to bed our extremely bad ride together early last year at Kent. We all rode together extremely well with myself suffering a slight bout of cramp towards the end, we stayed together and finished in 12th place, which we all were really happy with.

Phil raced with Seb and Graeme for this Diamond Jubilee team time trial over 25 miles, averaging 28.88 mph on a slowish day! Good enough for 2nd place by a mere 13 seconds, if only there hadn't been a mess up at the start it would have been even closer.

University Champsionships
27th May 2012
Phil was sponsored by Chichester University to compete in this race hosted by Loughborough University in Leicestershire. Driven up by Gaby they stayed overnight in a Travelodge ready for the days race over approximately 90 miles, on a hilly course, in baking sunshine and against some very strong University teams from all over the country.
A full field started the race and after one lap the field had already wittled down significantly, Phil rode an excellent race into 7th place beating a lot of riders who have been racing at a very high level, some even in Europe.
Really chuffed with his result, well done!

South Region Championships
20th May 2012
Not quite the way to celebrate our 23rd Wedding Anniversary but we popped over to see Phil racing the Southern Region Championships on the hilly course over at Stockbridge. This race was over 90 miles and featured the top riders in the South, getting out of the car we were greeted with Philip in a breakaway of 3 riders! There was a rider up the road but they quickly caught him, importantly though the bunch were about 2 minutes behind. With 3 laps to go however they were caught and Phil had to dig deep to stay in, finishing 17th out of 80 odd riders was really impressive and the highlight so far of his season.

Navigator racing
13th May 2012
After an abscence of 3 to 4 years, myself and Trevor entered the 3 hour Navigator Race at Cliddesden, bright sunny conditions and we were both looking forward to some mountainbiking. We were both feeling apprehensive but after the initial fumble for the first checkpoint we were soon into the swing of it. We missed out 3 minor checkpoints and tyres screeching skidded up to the finish line with 30 seconds to spare. We finished just short of the winners who managed a clearance, but good for 2nd place!!

12th May 2012
Following the recent torrential down pours, this years Milburys was dry and at times even warm. This was Phil's first race for a few weeks following illness, although expectations were high the reality was that it was going to be a tough day.
20th in the prologue and finishing in the main bunch in the main race was very respectable, a lot of riders pulled out in the main race due to the high pace.

Awesome location for cycling, stayed at Malaucene at the foot of Mont Ventoux with 8 other team mates, plus DCB & Kathy. Weather was sunny most days, there was a strong wind for a few days early on in the week, but generally the weather was perfect. Rode out on the Friday to watch Bradly Wiggins riding past on a stage of Paris-Nice, where he made history to be only the 2nd Brit in history alongside Tommy Simpson to win the Yellow Jersey. Only downside was the cough I'd brought with me which dampened my cycling ability until the last day.
